This is Me. Ramblings of a History Nerd

Hello world. I have never considered myself much of a writer, but I know there are things inside my brain that I would like to get out. I think of myself as a pretty unique individual but also one that can have periods of intense anxiety and depression, but can also be very happy-go-lucky. It is funny how your outlook can change very quickly. The human brain is almost too complicated for its own good.

Other things I am passionate about are technology, politics, history, and music. I could spend all day reading or watching film about World War I, World War II, Napoleonic Wars, the Roman Empire — you name it. I find it fascinating that history can and always will repeat itself. Human beings have such short memories though. We tend to think mostly about the “present” and not what has happened before. Donald Trump’s attempted coup d’état on January 6, 2021 was the culmination of many years of indoctrination by the conservative media. We humans tend to scare easily and many a demagogue in the course of history have used this inclination to rally the masses behind whatever ideology that they are espousing. It always starts with getting people to rally behind “protecting the country’s values” or protecting the real “’merica” from those that would destroy it (terrorists, immigrants, black people, Jews, you name it). The “Big Lie” is now the seemingly official platform of the Republican party. You can no longer say that the party supports democracy or free and fair elections. Candidates for office all across the country are using the “Big Lie” as their main campaign platform.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean dictator Kim John Un, and reality tv star and failed president Donald Trump

Look, I am a democrat and a liberal. I have always enjoyed a hearty debate with my conservative friends, but this has gone far beyond what is palatable. The line has been drawn in the sand. Please don’t take this personally. I don’t hold a negative opinion of all Republicans….there are plenty of kind and decent people that are GOP supporters. All of you supporters out there who believe the election was stolen; you are being MANIPULATED. If the leader you believe in constantly pumps his base full of the same bullshit over and over, they will believe it. It is human nature to follow. The amount of leaders out there is dwarfed by the amount of followers. This doesn’t make you a bad person. I know many conservative friends that talk about the election being stolen, but they aren’t very politically active. Guess what? You are still partially responsible. By not standing up and calling bullshit you are enabling this wannabe tyrant. Donald Trump does NOT believe in America and what it stands for. He believes in Donald Trump. That is it. He is a megalomaniac and a malignant narcissist. These are traits that are shared with other despots such as Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin.

Look, if you want to believe the “Big Lie”, you are entitled to. It is your right as an American. The terrifying thing about this entire situation is that if the Republican Party is not held to account for its actions and takes responsibility for what they have enabled, freedom as we know it will die. I know it is very tempting to support someone who has the same views as you. If you are a white, Christian, straight male who strongly believes in God, guns, and telling a woman what to do with their body because of scripture, then having a leader and party that has your virtues is easy to support. This view leaves no room for dissent though. This path will lead us to a Christian theocracy, or as I like to call it, the Christian version of Iran. Its a civilization where if you don’t believe in what I believe, then you are less than human. If you don’t support me then your vote doesn’t count as much. We have to “purify” the vote. We CANNOT let this happen.

A much too common sight

So regardless of your political affiliation, in all seriousness, the Democratic party is the only one standing up for democracy and freedom right now. I don’t agree with everything Democrats say, but I haven’t heard one of them saying that the “Big Lie” is real and using that to justify the new swathe of Jim Crow laws across Republican-lead legislatures in important battleground states. The Republican party knows they are the party that is out of ideas. They can’t use killing Obamacare as their platform forever. The have made the decision that in order to stay in power they will bow down and pledge fealty to a former reality TV star. He is so popular with this base that these politicians will say anything to get his endorsement, even though its nothing but outright lies. It is disgusting and unamerican. In all honesty, when I see a Trump flag that still stands, I see someone still supporting a failed president who tried to overturn a legitimate election. If you want more information on what Trump stands for, check this Wikipedia article:

Fascism — Wikipedia

Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and German dictator Adolf Hitler

Look, I am not calling Trump a Nazi or the Republican party National Socialists, but the line is becoming blurred. What is happening has happened many times before throughout history and something like Nazi Germany is what can happen when it goes unchecked for too long. America will no longer be an America of freedom if we continue to support Donald Trump. He is the antithesis of freedom and love for your country. We have to vote every single person out of government that is going along with the “Big Lie” Disagreeing with someone on policy and being able to do that without being arrested or executed without a fair trial is what our country was founded on. If we let this continue, the Trump way will be the only way that is tolerated. Your vote won’t count unless its the vote his party wants. That is not democracy. That is not freedom. That is fascism.

Okay I know that was very long-winded and this first blog post is way longer than I anticipated. There is so much I’ve been wanting to say and I’ve kept it bottled up. There is nothing more important than this though. The United States and everything it stands for is at stake. Nothing else matters.
